Elizabeth Warren subtweets Kelly Ayotte for calling Donald Trump a ‘role model’
It goes without saying: Sen. Elizabeth Warren does not think Donald Trump is a role model.
In one of her trademark tweetstorms Tuesday, the Massachusetts Democrat called out her Senate colleague Kelly Ayotte for suggesting as much in a debate Monday night.
Ayotte, a Republican running for re-election in New Hampshire, has since said she “misspoke.” Nevertheless, Warren told Senate Republicans and Ayotte, whose Twitter handle she did not tag, that they couldn’t walk back Trump.

Think about it: @realDonaldTrump calls Latinos rapists, African Americans thugs, & women fat pigs, & Kelly Ayotte thinks he’s a role model.

Four hours later – after massive public outcry & widespread condemnation – Kelly Ayotte asked for a do-over. Sorry. That’s not leadership.

You can’t walk this back, @SenateGOP: Can’t support @realDonaldTrump‘s agenda, say you’re voting for him, then pretend to shake your finger.

If the @SenateGOP don’t have the backbone to stand up to @realDonaldTrump, they don’t have the backbone to stand up for working families.

Those comments echoed remarks Warren made last month at the University of New Hampshire, where she blasted Ayotte for supporting Trump, even after he singled out the New Hampshire senator for criticizing him.
“If Kelly Ayotte doesn’t have the backbone to stand up to Donald Trump, I guarantee she doesn’t have the backbone to stand up for New Hampshire families,” Warren said, according to the Concord Monitor.
Warren also criticized Ayotte specifically for the Republican’s votes on the minimum wage, Planned Parenthood, and financial regulation, among other things.
“Kelly Ayotte isn’t part of the solution,” Warren said, as SeacoastOnline reported. “I wish she were because we need more moderate Republicans.”
Ayotte, who is locked in a tight race against Democratic challenger and New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan, has said she plans to vote for Trump, but will not endorse him. She is one of a number of GOP senators seeking re-election who have tried to distance themselves from their party’s nominee without alienating his supporters.
Ayotte’s campaign did not immediately respond to requests for comment Tuesday.
