How Donald Trump’s club profited from his relationship with the Dana-Farber center
With Donald Trump already under scrutiny for possibly using money from his charity for personal gain, a new report Thursday shows how the Republican presidential candidate benefited from his foundation’s relationship with the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
According to STAT’s Ike Swetlitz, the Boston-based cancer treatment and research center has received $350,000 from the Trump Foundation since 2010.
Even though—as the Washington Post has reported—Trump has not donated his own money to his namesake foundation since 2008, he reportedly received lofty honorary titles at Dana-Farber fundraisers. The center has also paid up to $150,000 in 2008 and every year since 2011 to host elegant fundraising galas at Trump’s private Palm Beach resort, STAT reported.
“It is customary to thank and recognize a person most associated with a foundation for that foundation’s support,” Susan Paresky, Dana-Farber’s senior vice president for development, told STAT. Paresky said the hospital’s relationship with Trump’s foundation and club is strictly business and “not a statement on the presidential election.”
The reports follows a line of work by the Post’s David Fahrenthold revealing how Trump has recently used his charity at times for personal gain, despite not having contributed to the foundation in eight years.
The Trump Foundation is currently under investigation by the state of New York, in light of reports that Trump used the charity money to purchase personal gifts and settle legal disputes.
Told by STAT about the relationship between Trump and Dana-Farber, the hospital’s former president, Dr. David Nathan, replied, “Oh Jesus. My first comment is no comment.”
“Poor Dana-Farber probably made a mistake getting involved with him,” he said, continuing to comment. “But how were they supposed to know what was going to happen?”
