Donald Trump had ‘nothing’ to say about ‘birther’ issue to people of color

After several years of promoting the “birther” movement against President Barack Obama, Donald Trump had little, or, in fact, “nothing,” to say to about how the claim may have affected people of color during Monday’s debate. When confronted on his previous insistence that Obama was not born in the United States, Trump, who acknowledged just over a week ago that the president was in fact born in Hawaii, touted his abilities to bring the president’s long-form birth certificate to light.

“I say nothing, because I was able to get him to produce it,” Trump said, when asked by moderator Lester Holt what he would say to “Americans, especially people of color” about the issue.

“He should have produced it a long time before. I say nothing,” Trump continued.

“When you talk about healing, I think I’ve developed very good relationships over the last little while with the African-American community,” he added. “I think you can see that. I feel that they really wanted me to come to that conclusion, and I think I did a great job and a great service, not only for the country, but for the president, in getting him to produce his birth certificate.”

His challenger, Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, responded by noting that Trump used the claim to launch his foray in politics, and it shouldn’t be forgotten easily.

“Well, just listen to what you heard,” she said. “He tried to put the whole racist birther lie to bed, but it can’t be dismissed that easily.”
