Elizabeth Warren orders cheesesteak from landmark Philadelphia steak shop ahead of DNC speech

Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren made a critical decision Sunday just moments after stepping off her plane in Philadelphia to attend the Democratic National Convention: where to order her cheesesteak.

Warren stopped by Pat’s King of Steak’s, one of the city’s best-known steak shops. She was the first famous face to show up at Pat’s, Frank Oliveri Jr., the restaurant’s owner, confirmed to Philadelphia magazine. He said he’s expecting others to roll through—especially the winners.

“Winners don’t go across the street,” Oliveri told Philadelphia, referring to the rival Geno’s Steaks, the outpost on the opposing corner that came under fire 10 years ago for adopting an English-only policy while ordering. “Only Republicans.”

While Warren might’ve been the first politician at Pat’s this week, she’s not the first Massachusetts politician to frequent the legendary establishment. When John Kerry took a break from campaigning for the Democratic nomination in 2003 and stopped at Pat’s, he made the famous blunder of ordering his cheesesteak with Swiss rather than the traditional whiz — a mistake the current Massachusetts senator hopefully took note of when placing her own order.

Former Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown opted for a different choice entirely, heading to Jim’s Steaks on South Street. He posted a photo of his meal to Twitter, taking a jab at Kerry’s decade-old faux pas.

Warren is scheduled to speak at the convention Monday night at 10.
