Marty Walsh ‘humbled’ by invitation to speak at Democratic convention next week
The mayor is expected to focus his speech on how Boston is a model for progressive change.
It’s official: Marty Walsh is slated to speak Monday at the Democratic National Convention.
The Boston mayor’s campaign confirmed Thursday he will address delegates on the convention’s opening day in the “early evening.” Walsh’s fellow Massachusetts Democrats, Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Rep. Joe Kennedy III, are also scheduled to speak Monday in Philadelphia.
Walsh said he was “humbled by [the] honor” to speak about presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, who he endorsed during the primary last November, at the convention.
According to the Walsh camp, his speech will “highlight the progressive policies that have helped Boston grow into one of the most innovative and thriving economic hubs in the United States.”
The former Dorchester labor leader said in a statement Thursday the presidential election this November “presents a clear choice for the future of working people in America.”
“Hillary Clinton’s vision is something I not only believe in, but I have lived: American workers need a fair shot at opportunity and they need second chances when life struggles and economic turbulence gets them off track,” Walsh said.
Walsh also referred to Clinton’s opponent, though not mentioning Republican nominee Donald Trump by name, who he said, “wants to build walls and knock the ladder out from anyone who tries to raise themselves up.”
He added that Trump’s campaign “has provided little detail for its vision, and seeks to divide the people of this great country at every given opportunity.”
According to the Democratic National Convention Committee, Monday’s theme will be “United Together” and will also feature headline speakers First Lady Michelle Obama and Sen. Bernie Sanders.
The night will focus on “the future of American families” and “an economy that works for everyone, not just those at the top,” a line which Clinton has recently adopted since clinching the nomination and receiving the endorsements of Warren and Sanders.
The convention committee also released an additional round of speakers Thursday, in addition to the headliners announced last week.
The four-day convention will also feature former President Bill Clinton on Tuesday, President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden on Wednesday, and Clinton and her daughter, Chelsea Clinton, on Thursday.
The list of additional speakers confirmed Thursday names several New England politicians, including New Hampshire Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, and Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy.
