Report: Ben Carson to endorse Donald Trump, who was pretty mean to him a few months ago
A few months ago, Donald Trump called Ben Carson “pathological’’ and compared the retired neurosurgeon to a child molester.
On Friday, Carson will endorse Trump, according to the Washington Post.
According to the report, the endorsement was agreed upon Thursday morning between Trump and Carson — who suspended his campaign last week — during a meeting at the Republican front-runner’s Palm Beach, Florida club, Mar-a-Lago.
Earlier Thursday, Carson said on Fox News Radio he was “certainly leaning’’ toward backing Trump. Per BuzzFeed News, Carson said that privately Trump is “actually a thinking individual.’’
“There’s two Donald Trumps. There’s the Donald Trump that you see on television and who gets out in front of big audiences, and there’s the Donald Trump behind the scenes. They’re not the same person. One’s very much and entertainer, and one is actually a thinking individual.’’
The official endorsement will come in a dual news conference Friday morning at the club, two unnamed sources told the Post.
Similar to last months’ endorsement from New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, the event comes the morning after a Thursday night GOP debate. As the Post’s Greg Sargent notes, the timing may provide some insurance for Trump in the event of a poor debate performance.
