Bernie Sanders sets personal fundraising record in 24 hours following Iowa caucus, aides say
The Iowa caucus may have been a “virtual tie’’ for the Democratic nomination, but Sanders won big in the form of donations.
An aide for the senator told The Washington Post that the campaign had raised $3 million between Monday night and Tuesday — the most contributions in any single day of the campaign — for Sanders to take with him in the days leading up to next week’s New Hampshire primary. He currently has $28 million on hand, according to the Associated Press.
The early February donations followed a successful fundraising month for Sanders, in which he raised nearly $21 million, his campaign said in a statement. The pace of donations sped up after the close race for Iowa, in which Clinton pulled ahead by just 0.2 percent of the vote.
The bulk of donations to Sanders’ campaign have averaged $29, with only 649 of the 1.3 million donors shelling out the maximum $2,700 contribution, according to the campaign. His number of backers hovers around 3.3 million, which campaign officials said is the most any candidate has received this early in a presidential race.
