The Boston Globe endorses Hillary Clinton for Democratic nomination
The Boston Globe’s editorial board wrote Hillary Clinton deserves to be the Democratic presidential nominee in its endorsement Sunday night of the former secretary of state.
According to the newspaper’s editorial board, Clinton would “protect, consolidate, and extend’’ the gains of Barack Obama’s presidency, with a “focus and toughness that Obama sometimes lacked’’ on issues like gun control and immigration reform.
“She is more seasoned, more grounded, and more forward-looking than in 2008, and has added four years as secretary of state to her already formidable resume,’’ wrote the Globe, which endorsed Obama in the 2008 primary. “Democrats in the Granite State should not hesitate to choose her.’’
The Globe’s endorsement comes on the same day that Clinton was endorsed by another prominent New England paper — the Concord Monitor.
In its endorsement, the Globe editorial board also knocked Clinton’s main Democratic opponent, Bernie Sanders, for his past votes on gun control.
“Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who voted against the Brady background-check bill and, his claims notwithstanding, is not a convincing champion of gun control,’’ the Globe wrote. “Sanders presents himself as an avowed foe of big business, but his vote to protect firearms corporations from legal liability tells a different story.’’
While the paper praised Sanders for bringing issues of income inequality to the forefront of the primary race — and expressed qualms about Clinton’s record on financial issues — ultimately they deemed the former secretary of state has best demonstrated a capacity to accomplish policy goals.
“While Sanders has made an important contribution to the Democratic primary campaign, it’s Clinton who would make a better president,’’ the Globe wrote.
