Bernie Sanders explains to Stephen Colbert why being called a socialist is not a bad thing
“This man is a self-described socialist, which for me is awkward because tonight’s show is brought to you by capitalism,’’ Stephen Colbert led during his monologue on The Late Show.
But throughout Colbert’s interview Friday with Bernie Sanders, the usually-blunt Vermont senator was full of laughs, as well as his talking points.
Asked by the new Late Show host why he didn’t take the label of socialist as an insult, Sanders pointed to the successful social democratic models in Scandinavia.

The Democratic presidential candidate also rebuffed the suggestion that he wouldn’t be able to win a general election. He told Colbert that his campaign was increasing the voter turnout by mobilizing people not usually politically involved. He also said “20, 30, 40 percent of the people’’ still didn’t know his name, suggesting the campaign had more room to grow.
Sanders also gave his thoughts on a few rapid-fire issues — including kissing on the first date — in a video posted online after the show.
