Baker starting to catch criticism from liberals
Gov. Charlie Baker is beginning to incur the ire of many of the same Massachusetts Democrats he appealed to in order to get elected, says a Boston Globe report.
According to analysts, Baker’s new spending decisions and policies are on track to alienate Massachusetts liberals. While Baker’s first months in office were marked by efforts to manage the broken MBTA and deal with a devastating winter, the Globe report points to his administration’s rewriting of state environmental regulations, slow progress on criminal justice reform, and attempts to cut educational programs as sources of tension with left-leaning Bay Staters.
He has also said his recent comments on the Confederate flag elicited cries of “what were you thinking?’’ from his friends.
“Charlie Baker is a conservative, it will continue to emerge, and there will be some people who will be surprised by it,’’ said Peter Ubertaccio, an associate political science professor at Stonehill College, in the Globe report.
