In a private meeting with people who have previously given him huge sums of money, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney said he has thought about running for president a third time, according to reports.

Sources from the meeting told the Wall Street Journal that Romney didn’t give a timetable for declaring a final decision, but that he was seriously considering the option. The comments came at a private meeting in New York that included about 30 of his former donors.

Since losing to President Obama in 2012, Romney has consistently said he was not interested in running for a third time. More recently, though, he has given himself an out that the situation could change.

• Romney in August 2014: “Someone else has a better chance than I do. And that’s what we believe, and that’s why I’m not running. And you know, circumstances can change.’’

• Romney in September 2014: “We’ve got a lot of people looking at the race,’’ he said. “We’ll see what happens.’’

• Ann Romney in October 2014: “At this moment, it’s ‘no’ for Mitt and for the boys,’’ she said. “Honestly, we’ll have to see what happens.’’

• Politico in December 2014: “While some people close to Romney insist he hasn’t moved from saying he has no plans to run, the 2012 Republican nominee has sounded at least open to the idea in recent conversations.’’

And now today’s news.

So what has changed since those times? Well, he did give bunny ears to former Senator Scott Brown at Charlie Baker’s inauguration on Thursday, for what that’s worth.

With Romney’s consideration of a run and the hordes of supporters pushing Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren to run for president, the pipe dreams of an all-Bay State face-off just became slightly less fantastical.
