This 40-something mom of 3 carried 4 babies for her gay friends—for free

A Newton mom of three has spent a good chunk of her 40s as a surrogate mom. And she’s done it all for free.
Rachel Segall, 47, mom to three teenagers, has given birth to four children for two gay couples in recent years, reports The Boston Globe. Her story is featured in the documentary “The Guys Next Door,” screening next week at the Provincetown International Film Festival.
“It’s at least $50,000 or $60,000 to pay someone to carry for you,” Segall told the Globe. “People can adopt, but why should we be able to have biological kids when we want to and they’re not able to have the same option?”
Doctors used the sperm of her gay male friends and donor eggs to impregnate Segall. In February, she delivered twins.
“Our gratitude isn’t expressed in big, grand gestures but in the smaller, day-to-day way our lives are woven together,” said Erik Mercer, Segall’s college friend who is now the father of two girls she carried. “How do you give a material thing to thank someone for something so extraordinary? We express it with this ongoing, deepening relationship.”
