Haverhill Public Schools apologized to families for holding school Tuesday after the city got nine inches of snow, according to a Facebook post from the district.

The school said it was following weather forecasts, which predicted snow wouldn’t start until 1 p.m. It started mid-morning instead.

“We called this one wrong, and we are so sorry!” the post reads.

The school also said students will not be penalized if their parents had them stay home or leave school early.

School was not canceled Wednesday, but there was a notice on the district’s website of a 2-hour start delay. It did cancel classes for preschool. A notification also went out on Facebook around 8:30 Wednesday morning.

Custodial staff were working into the night Tuesday to make sure snow was cleared at the schools, the school said in the post.

The storm began Monday night and lasted throughout Tuesday, dumping as much as 3 feet of snow in some areas of central and western Massachusetts; others closer to the coast got just a few inches or less.

Some material from the Associated Press was used in this report.
