Mass. State Police veteran investigator who ‘knew no limits’ for helping fellow cancer patients dies at 68
William 'Ironman' Coulter also completed over 150 marathons and 20 triathlons during his life, police said.
A nearly 45-year veteran of the Massachusetts State Police whose passion for physical fitness brought him to over 150 marathons and 20 triathlons died Monday after a brief illness, officials said.
Det. Lt. William Coulter, 68, “earned the unwavering respect and admiration of countless people from all walks of life” during his over four decades of tenure in the state police, the department said in a statement.
A graduate of the 59th Recruit Training Group, Coulter joined the state police in 1974, serving as an investigator and combating gang violence, according to authorities. Most recently, he was assigned to the Division of Investigative Services at General Headquarters.
Next month would have marked his 45th anniversary in the department.
“His passing leaves a tremendous void within the MSP family and beyond,” officials said.
After receiving, and surviving, more than one dire cancer prognosis, Coulter used his experiences to help other patients.
“Time and again, across all the years, he shared his hope, strength, and advice with countless people battling cancer whom he had met or heard about — many of whom he sought out after learning of their diagnosis,” state police said. “As well, he was one of the leading forces behind the Cops for Kids With Cancer charity, which provides financial support to families of children receiving cancer care. His energy and dedication to this part of his life’s journey knew no limits.”
Out of uniform, Coulter could likely be caught in athletic wear.
A determined and dedicated athlete, he completed over 150 marathons and 20 triathlons, police said.
Coulter ran the Boston Marathon annually, including the 2019 race, and helped wounded veterans and his fellow department members get involved, too, officials said.
“In recognition of his physical toughness and devotion to training, the gym at State Police General Headquarters was named years ago in honor of William ‘Ironman’ Coulter,” state police said.
Details for services will be released once they are finalized, according to the department.
