Hingham kids revive a lucky tradition on Patriots Way ahead of Super Bowl LX

A group photo under the Patriots Way sign has become a superstition for one Hingham neighborhood — and with the Patriots back in the big game, the kids aren't taking any chances.

From favorite jerseys to pregame playlists, Super Bowl week brings out all kinds of lucky rituals. In one Hingham neighborhood, that ritual involves a perfectly named street sign, homemade posters, and a growing group of kids who believe their photo might just help the New England Patriots win it all.

On Patriots Way, children gathered once again this week for a familiar tradition: posing beneath the Patriots Way street sign while waving signs, chanting, and wearing their Pats gear.

How the Patriots Way tradition began

The tradition began back in 2017, when the Patriots won the AFC Championship, securing a spot in the Super Bowl. Sarah Joseph, a Hingham mom, said neighbors were looking for a fun way to rally behind the team.

“Everyone was so excited that the team was heading back to the Super Bowl,” Joseph said. “So we decided to get the kids together.”

A few texts were sent out, Joseph said, and “before we knew it there were kids everywhere.” Families made homemade posters and dressed their kids in Patriots jerseys before lining everyone up for a group shot under the Patriots Way street sign.

“They were basically holding their own little pep rally right on our street,” she said.

A few weeks later, the Patriots won the Super Bowl — and what started as a one-time photo quickly took on a new meaning.

When superstition set in

In 2018, the Patriots returned to the Super Bowl — but the Patriots Way photo “just didn’t come together,” according to Joseph.

That year, the Patriots lost.

“You can call it superstition,” Joseph said, “but after that, we all agreed that the photo couldn’t be skipped again if the Patriots ever made it back into the Super Bowl.”

When the Patriots returned to Super Bowl 2019, the neighborhood didn’t take any chances. The same group of kids lined up on Patriots Way with posters raised and jerseys out to recreate the original shot.

Maybe it was coincidence. Maybe it was luck. But two things are true: the neighborhood brought the photo back, and the Patriots won the Super Bowl.

That year, the picture even got a repost from New England Patriots on X — and a like from Julian Edelman.

The tradition returns — again and again

With the Patriots headed to Super Bowl LX, the Patriots Way photo is back again this year. The same group of kids gathered — noticeably taller — for the familiar scene: winter coats, Patriots gear, handmade posters, and chanting as everyone squeezed into frame.

“It’s fun to look back at the pictures,” said 11-year-old Abby Joseph. “I was only two-and-a-half when we took the first one, and I loved watching the older kids cheer. Now I’m one of the older kids in the photo, and I still love this tradition.”

Eleven-year-old Alex Joyce agreed.

“We’ve got the best fans and the best neighborhood tradition,” he said. “Now let’s go win the Super Bowl.”
