Remembering Hiroshima: Imagine your city hit by an atomic bomb

The radiation zone if an atomic bomb were dropped on Boston, according to PRI’s application via PRI’s The World

It can be difficult to consider the sheer horror of an atomic bombing, butPRI’s new interactive map will show you the bleak and sobering reality of nuclear weapons.

The news organization has developed an app that allows you to see the catastrophic effects of weapons of mass destruction. The application aims to draw attention to the 70th anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing.

This Thursday marks the anniversary, and according to PRI’s The World, many people have allowed themselves to forget about the American bombing that killed about 66,000 people, mainly civilians, injuring a further 69,000, and affecting tens of thousands more with radiation-related disease.

PRI The World’s site also features a sliding image showing before and after aerial photos of Hiroshima, allowing you to see the atrocious contrast.

We plugged in Boston, and dropped the bomb. The app said everywhere within a 12-mile radius – including Wellesley, Salem, and Dedham – would be affected by the explosion, the resulting fires, and radiation. Hundreds of thousands of lives would be gone in the blink of an eye.
