Why Does Drudge Think Romney May Run for President Again?

If Jeb Bush flounders, will Republicans really turn back to Mitt Romney? The Drudge Report seems to hope so. AP/Charles Dharapak

The eternal flame of a Mitt Romney candidacy still burns, maybe.

After a Washington Post report Saturday included two-month-old speculation that Romney could make a 2016 presidential run, the Drudge Report bannered a link to the story titled “Romney May Return.’’

In the Post’s report, Democratic strategist James Carville speculated at a panel discussion in February that if former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush fails in the Granite State, Republicans may summon the former Massachusetts governor and 2012 GOP nominee to run. From the article:

“Jeb Bush has to win New Hampshire. It’s a must-win for him, because he will lose Iowa. You’ve got to win one of them, particularly if [you’re] considered to be something of a front-runner,’’ Democratic strategist James Carville said at a panel discussion in February celebrating the New Hampshire primary’s upcoming 100th anniversary.

“I will go further,’’ Carville said. “If Jeb Bush loses New Hampshire, they’ll get Mitt Romney back in the race’’ — a reference to the GOP’s 2012 nominee, who briefly flirted with the idea of making a third bid for the White House.

Hours after the Post’s report published Saturday night, the Drudge Report — a news and politics aggregation site created and edited by Matt Drudge — prominently displayed a link to the report.

During the 2012 Republican primaries, Drudge was notably forward with his support for Romney’s candidacy. When Romney won the Republican nomination in March 2012, the Drudge Report led with the headline “Finally’’ under a photo of Romney holding the Olympic torch. Earlier that month, fellow Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum said that Drudge was “showing for Romney.’’

Representatives from the Drudge Report did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.
