As if we could get any more cynical about American politics.

In a video released today by Business Insider, former Massachusetts congressman Barney Frank said he thinks House of Cards is “terrible’’ because it negatively distorts the perception of American politics.

“No one should take that as remotely serious,’’ Frank said. “It is the kind of thing that debases people’s view of politics.’’

It’s not the first time Frank has railed against House of Cards. In 2013, he wrote a 751-word op-ed in the Portland Press Herald denouncing the show.

In the video today, Frank says an ambassador friend was told by the president of another country not to talk to him about human rights, because he had seen House of Cards and knew how bad it was in the United States.

That head of state’s media literacy notwithstanding, with Congress’ approval rate hovering in the mid-teens, it seems unlikely a Netflix-exclusive show could do much more to diminish American’s perception of their political system, no matter how many awards it wins.
