Adnan From ‘Serial’ Wins Chance to Appeal His Conviction
Adnan Syed, the man at the center of the hit podcast “Serial,’’ will be allowed to appeal his conviction for murder in the death of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee in 1999.
The decision from the Maryland Court of Special Appeals will allow Syed and his lawyers the chance to prove his innocence in an appeal scheduled for June 2015, The Baltimore Sun reports.
Syed was sentenced to life in prison for killing Lee, a fellow student at Woodlawn High School. He has maintained his innocence and argued he received ineffective legal counsel.
His case garnered renewed attention with the popularity of “Serial,’’ a 12-part podcast in which “This American Life’’ reporter Sarah Koenig re-investigated the circumstances of Syed’s conviction.
