US Central Command Twitter Account Hacked
The YouTube and Twitter pages for The U.S. Central Command appear to have been hacked by supporters of ISIS. The hack occurred around the time that President Barack Obama was giving a speech on cybersecurity to the Federal Trade Commission today.
Messages threatening American troops were posted to both accounts. The @CENTCOM Twitter account was suspended around 1:10 p.m. according to The Washington Post, and the YouTube account is listed as terminated due to “repeated or severe violations’’ of YouTube’s Community Guidelines. Until around 1:30 p.m. the page depicted a “Cyber Caliphate’’ banner with an underline – “i love you isis.’’ Two Islamic State videos were posted to the account within minutes of each other “O Soldiers of truth Go Forth’’ and “Flames of War ISIS Video.’’
According to The Post, the first hacked tweet appeared around 12:30 p.m. A tweet sent out on the account said, “AMERICAN SOLDIERS, WE ARE COMING, WATCH YOUR BACK. ISIS.’’ Another tweet, accompanied by a picture of what appeared to be American soldiers in an office, stated, “ISIS is already here, we are in your PCs, in each military base.’’
The Associated Press is reporting that an anonymous senior defense official has confirmed that the two accounts were “compromised’’ and that CENTCOM was taking steps to address the matter.
