Watch this enthusiastic tribute a Harvard a cappella group performed for John Williams
Despite the dreary weather, a Harvard a cappella group gave a effervescent tribute to composer and Boston Pops conductor laureate John Williams during the Thursday morning exercises of Harvard’s 366th commencement. Williams, who served as the conductor of the Pops from 1980 to 1993, was given an honorary degree of Doctor of Music by the university. In conferring the degree upon the award-winning composer, Harvard President Drew Faust called Williams the “superman of music for the movies,” adding, “his melodies dwell deep inside our memories, his harmonies induce our hearts to soar.”For their tribute, the Harvard Din & Tonics included songs from some of Williams’s most famous film scores, including Jaws, Superman, Indiana Jones, and Star Wars.

Speakers during the morning program made frequent references to Star Wars, which premiered 40 years ago Thursday. Acclaimed actor James Earl Jones, whose voice is famously known as that of Darth Vader in the movies, was also honored during the commencement with a Doctor of Arts degree. Commencement speaker and Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg, seated beside Jones, laughed as the theme of his Bar Mitzvah — Star Wars — was included in his introduction. Zuckerberg was awarded a Doctor of Laws degree.
