Honing her skills from behind a news desk, former Boston 25 News anchor Vanessa Welch became a pro at distilling complex information into broadcasts fit for prime time.
Now, the Emmy Award winner is taking those talents over to the financial sector, where she recently began a new role as vice president for financial insights at Empower. Welch joined Empower on June 3, the financial services company announced Tuesday.
Welch, who wrapped up a nearly nine-year stint at Boston 25 last month, “will work in close collaboration with Empower business teams to help stakeholders understand the meaning and implications of financial concepts and how individuals can take action to improve their own financial security,” Empower said in a news release.
The company specifically noted Welch’s past coverage on topics ranging from personal finance and market events to macroeconomics.
“Vanessa has all the tools and expertise to help Empower serve as a beacon of clarity and a source of insights to help more people achieve a better understanding of the financial services they need and want,” Empower President and CEO Edmund F. Murphy III said in a statement.
Welch will report to Senior Vice President for Corporate Affairs Stephen Gawlik, who praised the former anchor as “a skilled journalist and interviewer.”
“Vanessa will help Empower subject matter experts break down and explain otherwise complex investing and savings concepts in order to help drive new understanding among consumers,” Gawlik said in a statement. “She has honed her ability to deliver insights to consumers of news every day for more than two decades — that experience will be a great benefit to Empower customers who need and want financial insights.”
During her on-air sendoff last month, Welch said she would be staying in Boston with working hours that are “a bit more typical” than her nightly newscasts allowed. She also said the career change will allow her to spend more time with her family.
“It is refreshing to join the Empower team, where there’s a deep-seated commitment to the customer,” Welch said in a statement. “I believe that in partnership with Empower’s team of professionals, together we can help drive greater financial literacy and ultimately help people on their path to achieving their financial goals.”
