His days of regular 2 a.m. wake ups now behind him, Martin joked, “I’m gonna take a hammer to the alarm clock, that’ll be the first thing I do.”

WBZ anchor and South Shore native Liam Martin announced his retirement from TV news Friday, wrapping up an onscreen career that featured dance moves, Boston accents, and even a stint as a “Jeopardy!” clue reader

“I have decided to step away from television news. It was not an easy decision,” Martin said during Friday morning’s newscast. “I love this team so much. I love this job so much. But it was time for some more work/family balance for me.”

Martin said he will be switching to a career in communications and public relations, though he did not specify where.

Martin moved up to WBZ’s morning show in 2020.

“When I started my career, I never thought in a million years that I would get to anchor a show at WBZ and be part of that history, be part of this team,” he said during Friday’s newscast. “Simply put, it was a dream come true.”

That said, the anchor also seemed eager to do away with the 2 a.m. wake ups that come with the TV news territory.

“I’m gonna take a hammer to the alarm clock, that’ll be the first thing I do,” Martin joked. His colleagues on the morning show helped him out with the gift of a hammer and a tank top that read, “I’m a retired journalist and I love my new schedule.”

“I am really excited about what’s next,” he said. “I want to be able to be a full-time dad and focus on that role, a full-time husband. But there is a lot that I’m going to miss about this job. Most important will be the people.”

Hugging his fellow anchors, Martin also extended his thanks to viewers watching from home.

“This has been a dream come true to do this, and I don’t take that for granted,” he said.
