Matt Lauer releases statement after firing from NBC for sexual misconduct: ‘I am truly sorry’

Fired Today show host Matt Lauer released a statement Thursday morning expressing “sorrow and regret” a day after NBC announced the network anchor had been fired for inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace.

Host Savannah Guthrie read the statement from her former co-host on Today.

“Some of what is being said about me is untrue or mischaracterized, but there is enough truth in these stories to make me feel embarrassed and ashamed,” Lauer said in the statement. “I regret that my shame is now shared by the people I cherish dearly.”

On Wednesday, Guthrie read the announcement from NBC Chairman Andrew Lack that her colleague had been fired after a “detailed complaint” was received Monday night.

“We were also presented with reason to believe this may not have been an isolated incident,” Lack said in the statement.

NBC News said it received two new complaints about Lauer on Wednesday after news of his firing. Variety also posted what it said was a two-month investigation into Lauer that included allegations that the he exposed himself to a colleague and gave another co-worker a sex toy with an explicit note detailing how he wanted to use it on her.
