Just before taking the air Wednesday, Matt Lauer’s former Today show colleagues learned that he’d been fired after a “detailed complaint from a colleague about inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace.”
Host Savannah Guthrie said on air the Today organization received a morning memo from NBC Chairman Andrew Lack with the news, which she then relayed to the audience.
“As I’m sure you can imagine, we are devastated and we are still processing all of this,” Guthrie said. “And I will tell you right now we do not know more than what I just shared with you, but we will be covering this story as reporters, as journalists. I’m sure we will be learning more details in the hours and days to come, and we promise we will share that with you.”
“I’m heartbroken for Matt,” she added. “He is my dear, dear friend, and my partner, and he is beloved by many, many people here. And I’m heartbroken for the brave colleague who came forward to tell her story and any other women who have their own stories to tell.”
Megyn Kelly also addressed the news on Megyn Kelly Today, saying “this one does hit close to home.”
“We are in the middle of a sea change in this country,” Kelly said, “an empowerment revolution, in which women who for years had felt they had no choice but to simply deal with being harassed at work are now starting to picture another reality, to feel that change is within their grasp.”
Hosts Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb discussed Lauer’s dismissal as well, with Gifford calling it a “very, very sad day.”
“I texted [Lauer] this morning, I said, ‘I adore you,’” Gifford said. “And no person is perfect in this world, nobody is.”
Lauer has not publicly responded to his dismissal or the allegations in Lack’s statement as of early Wednesday afternoon.
