WHDH no longer fighting to keep NBC affiliation, plans independent launch
Ed Ansin, the owner of WHDH, said he plans to launch an independent station with additional local news coverage rather than continuing a months-long battle to remain an NBC affiliate, according to The Boston Globe.
Ansin previously filed a federal lawsuit against Comcast Corp., which owns NBC, alleging breach of contract after the network decided to drop its affiliation with WHDH and launch its own Boston-based station. That case was dismissed in May, and while Ansin filed an appeal, he told the Globe it’s likely WHDH will go forward as an independent station with increased broadcasting and an additional 30 employees.
“Being an independent is very challenging,” Ansin told the Globe. “It is much more competitive. It takes more innovation.”
