"He had a gift to connect with all on things funny and quirky or interesting and meaningful, instinctively bridging divides since he truly never saw any."

Rob Halpin was a natural. A quick wit, encyclopedic knowledge, and progressive outlook contributed to the magic that was Robbie and won him many life-long friends. But it was his genuine heart of gold and the open, easy-going, down-to-earth way about him that truly set him apart. These were his greatest gifts.

Robert Thomas Halpin II passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Thursday, March 26, 2026. Born on August 24, 1966, Rob was raised in the rural town of Somers, CT, where several generations of Halpins worked in the mill and where his mother from Boras, Sweden, settled after a summer adventure caring for the mill owners’ children. From his father Robert (Buddy), he inherited his natural charisma, fun-loving personality, musical talent, and strong sense of community. From his mother Britta, he inherited his international and socially-progressive outlook, and his love of learning and all things Swedish.

After graduating from Tufts University in 1988, Robbie settled in the Greater Boston area with his friend and wife Ann and sons Eli and Caleb. Robbie maintained strong ties to friends and the music and restaurant scene in Cambridge and Somerville while living on a lakeside home in Natick. He managed, and then owned, Rudy’s Cafe in Teele Square for decades, building many memorable moments and close-knit, long-term friendships there as he had in all spheres of his life. He employed people from across the globe—at least five of the seven continents—and took pride in the fact that nearly every employee—including himself—was an immigrant or child of an immigrant. He had a gift to connect with all on things funny and quirky or interesting and meaningful, instinctively bridging divides since he truly never saw any.

Robbie made this world a better place and lives in all of our hearts. He is survived by his wife Ann Clifford, sons Eli and Caleb, daughter-in-law Sofia, grandson Lucas, brother Peter, sister Maria Geryk, and a much larger loving extended family, all of whom he cherished.

Please join Robbie’s family and friends this Saturday, April 4th, 2026, 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm at the John Bryant Funeral Home, 56 Pemberton Road, Wayland, MA, to be followed by a celebration of his life probably in June.
