Richard Fletcher, a lifelong educator, coach, and devoted family man, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2025, at the age of 83. Born in Everett, Massachusetts, on November 21, 1941, to Lilian (née Blake) and John C. Fletcher, Richard embodied the values of hard work, community, and kindness that defined his life.

A graduate of Melrose High School (Class of 1959), Richard went on to earn his degree from Northeastern University in 1964. That same year, he began a distinguished 39-year career with the Newton Public Schools, leaving an indelible mark on generations of students. He started at Pierce Elementary School, later taught at Bigelow Junior High, and spent a quarter century as a beloved physical education teacher at Newton North High School.

Beyond the classroom, Richard coached with passion and purpose, serving as assistant coach of the varsity hockey team, football coach, and women’s softball coach. His character-shaping guidance won him the admiration of students, players, and colleagues alike.

Richard was the husband of Warene Lacey Fletcher; the brother of Janet Fletcher of Marstons Mills, MA; and the father of daughter Amy Anderson (and her husband, Brian Anderson) of Ossining, NY, and sons Jason Fletcher (and his wife, Jodi Fletcher) of Needham, MA, and John Fletcher of Media, PA. His greatest joy came from his grandchildren—Luke Anderson (27), Nicholas Anderson (25), Lilly Fletcher (14), and Aaron Fletcher (13).

An enthusiastic golfer, Richard celebrated two holes-in-one—a fitting testament to his precision, patience, and love for the game.

Richard Fletcher lived a life of service, mentorship, and quiet excellence. He will be remembered for the years he taught and for the lives he touched.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 22, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Eaton & Mackay Funeral Home, 465 Center Street, Newton Corner, Massachusetts 02458.

In lieu of flowers, a donation in his memory to Newton Athletes Unlimited would be appreciated.
