Local obituary: Mike Ndwiga, 44, Roslindale father, DJ, and ‘Undisputed King of Locs’ in Boston

Nov. 7, 2015, was proclaimed "Mike Ndwiga Day in the City of Boston" by the Boston City Council, in recognition of his community contributions.

Michael Mutuma Ndwiga, of Roslindale, passed unexpectedly, after a brief illness traveling to Kenya, April 22, 2024, at age 44.

Born in Nairobi, Mike moved to the US in 2008 and opened his business, Mike Locs and Braids, in 2012. He was recognized as “Undisputed King of Locs” in Boston and November 7, 2015, was proclaimed “Mike Ndwiga Day in the City of Boston” by the Boston City Council, in recognition of his community contributions.

Mike was also a DJ, playing reggae and Afropop at venues around the city and on b87fm.

Mike is survived by his children, Genevieve Gicuku Ndwiga and Roman Ndwiga Gagarin of Roslindale; his parents, Rosemary and Steven; his sisters, Joyce and Flora, and brother, Peter, all of Nairobi. He was predeceased by his sister, Patricia, of the UK.

A Funeral was held in Nairobi in May. A Memorial Service will be held, June 2, at 1pm, at the Roslindale Congregational Church, followed by a Celebration of Life/Reception, 2-5pm on Birch St. plaza in Roslindale Square.
