A 26-year-old mother sprang into action Monday afternoon, rescuing her 2-year-old son after their car crashed into a Vermont river, officials say.
Hartford firefighters responded to the Ottauquechee River at about 12:45 p.m. for a report of a submerged occupied vehicle near Quechee Main Street and the Mill Run condominiums. “The driver was hanging onto the vehicle as it floated downstream,” the fire department said in a release posted to Facebook.
By the time an ambulance arrived about four minutes later, the mother and her son were “safe on the bank of the river.”
“The child was in a car seat in the back seat; the mother was able to unbuckle him, cut through the deployed driver’s-side airbag, and emerge through the window,” the fire department said. “The two were able to swim ashore safely.”
The pair was taken to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center for evaluations, but “no serious injuries were apparent,” officials said.
Rescue swimmers checked to make sure no one else was in the vehicle, which was later removed. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Hartford is on the New Hampshire border, across from Lebanon, New Hampshire.
