MBTA sets $80 round-trip train fare for World Cup games

Sold exclusively on mTicket, tickets will be available Wednesday, April 8.

Fans walk from the commuter rail station towards Gillette Stadium before the international friendly between Brazil and France on March 26, 2026.

The MBTA announced that round-trip tickets between South Station and Gillette Stadium for World Cup matches will cost $80, with tickets going on sale Wednesday, April 8.

Tickets will be sold exclusively through the mTicket app and will be valid for travel across the entire Commuter Rail network on match days, according to a statement from transit officials.

Tickets for the first five matches will be available starting at 11 a.m. Wednesday; tickets for Round of 32 and quarterfinal matches will go on sale closer to those match dates.

Train schedules have also been released.

The MBTA said Commuter Rail “Boston Stadium Trains” will be the only public transit option directly serving Gillette Stadium on match days. No subway or regular bus routes will operate to the stadium, though additional bus options are expected to be announced by organizers in the coming days.

“Compared to driving, parking, and event-day traffic delays, Commuter Rail provides a predictable and more affordable way to travel to and from matches,” MBTA officials said in the statement.

Officials are urging fans and residents to use public transportation to help reduce severe congestion expected during the tournament.

“Choosing transit can help reduce congestion, improve safety, and ensure a smoother experience for everyone traveling this summer,” the statement reads.

According to the statement, MBTA General Manager and CEO Phillip Eng said traffic management plans have been outlined, including roadside message signs, the deployment of tow trucks to quickly clear disabled vehicles, and adjustments to High Occupancy Vehicle lane schedules on Interstate 93 between Boston and Braintree.

“The MBTA is proud to have the opportunity to enable football fans from near and far to travel the Commonwealth, and we are ready to deliver unprecedented transit services to the seven World Cup matches held at Boston Stadium,” Eng said. “The MBTA and MassDOT are focused on ensuring that we balance and support all of the celebrations and events this summer with the needs of our daily riders and drivers that count on the transportation system 365 days a year.”

Service details

The MBTA will operate 14 express trains on the Franklin/Foxboro Commuter Rail Line between South Station and Gillette Stadium on match days, citing limited parking at the stadium, transit officials said. Additional staff will be stationed to assist passengers.

Commuter Rail lines will be adjusted from June 8 to July 12, with special match-day service planned across the southern portion of the network.

“Most regular peak-period Commuter Rail service will be preserved to minimize impacts to daily ridership,” transit officials said.

Subway lines — including the Red, Orange, Green, and Blue lines — along with select bus routes will offer extended service on match days. Service will run until 2 a.m. on weekdays and until 4 a.m. on June 14 to accommodate fans attending the June 13 match.

Ticketing information

Passengers are encouraged to purchase tickets as early as possible, as sales will close once capacity is reached, MBTA officials said.

Tickets are nonrefundable and nonexchangeable and must be purchased using the same email associated with a valid match ticket. All passengers, including children, must have a ticket.

Officials also recommended allowing extra travel time, packing light, following Gillette Stadium’s clear bag policy, and signing up for MBTA service alerts for real-time updates.

Additional summer discounts

This service coincides with previously announced summer fare discounts

Riders will be able to travel for free on Fridays from June through August, and monthly passes will be discounted by 50% during that period. Monthly pass holders will also be allowed to bring an additional rider for $1 on weekends.

“By pairing expanded service with lower fares, the administration is making it easier for residents to save money, avoid traffic, and get where they need to go,” MBTA officials said.
