A resident died and two others were taken to the hospital after an overnight house fire in Brockton, according to fire officials.

“Our hearts are with the family that lost a loved one this morning,” Brockton Fire Chief Brian Nardelli said in a joint statement from the Department of Fire Services. “This is a terrible tragedy for them and a sad day for our community.”

At about 12:30 a.m. Saturday, Brockton firefighters responded to a structure fire at 80 Glendale Ave., officials said. Intense flames were venting through the back and right windows of the single-family home.

The heaviest flames were on the second floor of the home, the Brockton Fire Department said on Facebook. Firefighters found that the blaze engulfed the entire second floor, “including the hallway and bedrooms.”

After learning that someone was still inside, the firefighters entered the home to search for them while battling the blaze, according to fire officials. In a room “fully engulfed in flames,” they found and tried to save the occupant, believed to be a woman in her 40s, but she was dead.

Once the flames were extinguished, investigators examined the scene and determined that the fire began in a second-floor bedroom. It initially did not appear suspicious or intentionally set, but the exact cause is still unknown, officials said.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of the woman’s death. At this time, the Brockton Fire and Police Departments, along with state police fire investigators and detectives, are still looking into what caused the fire, according to officials.
