A snowboarder was seriously injured late Monday afternoon after he caught an edge and struck a tree while “navigating through a steep, rocky section” out of bounds at Cannon Mountain in New Hampshire, officials said.

The 36-year-old Ashland, New Hampshire, man had been at the ski area with friends “when they decided to finish the day in a zone, which is not patrolled or maintained, outside of the ski area facilities,” according to a release from the state Fish and Game Department.

“Unable to evacuate or move through the very steep terrain with the severity of the injury, the group made a phone call to Ski Patrol for help,” officials said.

Two ski patrollers responded and Fish and Game was called in as well shortly before 4:30 p.m.; the ski area had closed at 4 p.m.

“Due to the technical mountain terrain and the conditions that [the man] was in, ropes were required to safely extricate and transport the snowboarder back to the base of the mountain,” officials said.

He was then taken to a hospital in a private vehicle.
