Before the first whistle blows at Gillette Stadium for the World Cup, fans will have one important goal to score: a train ticket.

Train tickets to Gillette Stadium will go on sale April 8 and will be available exclusively through the MBTA’s mTicket application, transit officials said in a statement.

To purchase a ticket, riders must first create an mTicket account. MBTA officials recommend downloading the app and setting up an account in advance.

Fans must also have a same-day World Cup match ticket in order to buy a train ticket, according to the MBTA.

Train tickets will be limited — and officials urge riders to purchase them early, according to the statement.

Train tickets will be nonrefundable and cannot be transferred to another mTicket account, the agency said. If multiple train tickets are purchased, each must be verified with a corresponding World Cup match ticket.

Officials said enhanced security measures will be in place at Gillette Stadium. Only certain bags — including one-gallon clear plastic bags and small wristlets — will be allowed inside. Items prohibited at the stadium will also not be permitted on the train.

The MBTA has not yet announced official ticket prices.

The Athletic reported last week that round-trip fares could reach $75 or more. By comparison, the MBTA charged $30 for a round-trip ticket to a recent France vs. Brazil match, which served as a test run for the upcoming tournament.

Meanwhile, Gov. Maura Healey on Monday announced a series of summer fare promotions for the Commuter Rail

Riders will be able to travel for free on Fridays from June through August, and monthly passes will be discounted by 50% during that period. Monthly pass holders will also be allowed to bring an additional rider for $1 on weekends.
