Bridgewater police warned residents Sunday about a scam involving someone pretending to be Tom Brady after a recent incident targeted a local family.
The scam was reported around noon on March 23, when police were notified that a family member was being defrauded, according to a statement from the Bridgewater Police Department.
The victim had been sending gift cards to a scammer who was posing as the former New England Patriots quarterback, police say.
Police did not release the name of the scammer.
Police provided guidance to the family on how to stop further payments and prevent additional losses, authorities said.
The Federal Trade Commission classifies schemes like this as “imposter scams,” in which fraudsters pose as trusted figures — such as government officials, businesses, or well-known public personalities — and may even manipulate caller ID information to appear legitimate.
To avoid falling victim, the FTC advises never sending money or gift cards to someone you don’t know, being wary of anyone who urges you to move money to “protect” it, and avoiding clicking on links or calling numbers included in unexpected messages.
