These New Hampshire firefighters received a visit Wednesday from a thankful pooch whose life they saved.

Last month, Ziggy the dog was playing outside and accidentally cut his leg on a solar light that was hidden beneath the snow, Campton-Thornton Fire Rescue said on Facebook. At the time, his owners were on vacation, and a dog sitter was caring for him.

After noticing that Ziggy’s wound was bleeding severely, the sitter prepared to bring him to the vet, fire officials said. On the way, the bleeding got worse, so they stopped at the Campton-Thornton Fire Department.

Firefighters Paul Spring, Mark Roland, and Basil Sole quickly jumped into action, applying pressure to Ziggy’s wound and fashioning a tourniquet to control the bleeding. Ziggy was then taken to a nearby animal hospital, where he underwent surgery to repair a cut artery, nerves, and tendons, according to fire officials.

A veterinarian later said that the firefighters’ quick thinking ultimately saved Ziggy’s life. If not for their actions, Ziggy would not have survived the ride to the hospital due to excessive blood loss, fire officials said.

“Ziggy and his owners are extremely grateful to Paul for saving his life,” Campton-Thornton Fire Rescue said. “We hear that this lucky pupper is well on his way to making a full recovery.”
