Crews recovered the body of a missing College of Holy Cross student Monday afternoon after a canoe carrying him and another student capsized on Lake Hayward in East Haddam, Connecticut, on Saturday night, authorities said.
Connecticut Environmental Conservation Police (DEEP EnCon Police) said two 20-year-old men were in the canoe when it overturned.
The body of Dominick Tocci, of Woodstock, Connecticut, was recovered around 3 p.m. Monday, police said in a statement released that night. The other Holy Cross student in the canoe had been rescued by a Good Samaritan in a paddleboat following the incident and taken to a local hospital. He was later discharged.
Before Tocci’s body was recovered, DEEP EnCon Police conducted an extensive search that began on Saturday, according to the statement.
“DEEP sends its condolences to Dominick’s family and loved ones,” police said. “DEEP appreciates the efforts of all of the emergency response entities involved.”
The incident remains under investigation by DEEP EnCon Police. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine Tocci’s cause and manner of death, police said.
