A College of the Holy Cross student is missing after a canoe capsized on a Connecticut lake Saturday night, officials say.

Connecticut Environmental Conservation Police said two 20-year-old men were in the canoe when it overturned on Lake Hayward in East Haddam.

A nearby resident reported hearing calls for help. One of the men was rescued by a Good Samaritan in a paddleboat, brought to shore, and transported to a local hospital, police said. The man was later discharged from the hospital.

The second man, identified as Dominick Tocci, a 20-year-old junior at Holy Cross, remains missing, police said.

“Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” police said.

Search efforts began Saturday night and continued into Sunday, involving water-based crews, aerial surveillance, and dive teams, according to police. The search was suspended Sunday evening and was expected to resume Monday morning.

In a statement, Holy Cross said Tocci is a political science major from Woodstock, Connecticut, and the other man in the canoe is also a student.

College officials said they are in contact with local law enforcement as the search continues and have made counseling services available to students, faculty, and staff.
