A police officer in Weymouth shot and killed a person who was allegedly armed with a knife at a state park Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.
Around 4 p.m., Weymouth police responded to a 911 call for service at the Webb Memorial State Park off River Street, according to a statement from Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey.
When police arrived, they encountered an individual, allegedly holding a knife, who appeared to be “in distress,” according to Morrissey’s office. An officer discharged their weapon and struck the person.
Police immediately provided medical aid before the individual was transported to a nearby hospital, where they were later pronounced dead, officials said.
In a statement posted on Facebook, the Weymouth Police Department described the situation as a “critical incident” and alerted the public.
“No ongoing threat to public safety,” the post reads. “Updates to follow.”
The shooting is under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office.
Authorities have not released the names of the person who was killed or the officer involved.
