Boston police officers shot and killed a carjacking suspect in Roxbury on Wednesday night, officials said.
At around 9:45 p.m., BPD officers responded to a radio call reporting a carjacking in the area of 1500 Tremont St. They were given a description of the vehicle and later found it near 10 Linwood Square, Commissioner Michael Cox told reporters.
Officers approached the vehicle on foot. The suspect did not heed multiple commands the officers made. Instead, the suspect accelerated the vehicle in an attempt to flee. They struck a BPD cruiser in doing so, Cox said.
Multiple officers fired their weapons, hitting the suspect. He was brought to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to Cox. The suspect has not been publicly identified yet.
The officers involved were also brought to a local hospital, but they are in good condition, Cox said. The victim of the carjacking was not injured.
Cox offered his condolences to the family of the suspect.
“Our goal is never to take life,” Cox said.
“This job is difficult, there’s no doubt about that. We face many dangers in general … carjackings are very very tricky and difficult things,” he added.
The BPD and Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden’s office are leading an ongoing investigation.
“There’s a lot more that we don’t know than we do know at this point,” Hayden said.
