Foul play suspected after human remains found in Shirley, police say

A group of young people made the gruesome discovery Wednesday evening, officials said.

Human remains were found in Shirley Wednesday, and foul play is suspected.

At about 5:30 p.m., a group of young people were walking near the Maritime Veterans Memorial Bridge when they spotted “what appeared to be something consistent with a body part in the water,” according to a joint release from Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Shirley Chief of Police Samuel Santiago.

Police arrived at the scene and confirmed the presence of human remains. “Preliminary information” indicates that foul play was involved, and an investigation is ongoing.

State Police detectives and the agency’s dive team are helping with the investigation. Members of the public should expect to see an increased police presence near the Veterans Memorial Bridge and Shaker Road Thursday, officials said.
