Some changes are in store for Kendall Square Cinema

Big changes are coming to Kendall Square Cinema. The indie favorite will undergo top-to-bottom renovations starting in March, bringing in larger screens, luxury recliners, and an expanded menu to create a more modern movie-going experience.

The owners, Landmark Theaters, say they will finish the upgrades by late summer.

“The business has changed quite a bit in terms of art,” said Mark Mulcahy, the head of brand and marketing at Landmark. “We still play lots of art films and still cater to that audience.”

However, the theater will also continue to play commercial films to cater to a larger audience.

Operated by Landmark Theatres since 1995, Kendall Square Cinema has hosted special events such as local premieres, benefit screenings, and film festivals. The theater is known for showcasing independent films, foreign-language cinema, restored classics, and documentaries.

It last underwent extensive remodeling in 2017, when the owners upgraded the lobby, auditoriums, and restrooms, and opened a beer-and-wine bar.

“It’s been a minute,” Mulcahy said.

The new plans include combining the two largest auditoriums into a single venue featuring a giant-format screen, a stage, event lighting, and luxury recliner seating with tables and power outlets.

The cinema will also have a full-service bar area with booth seating and tables. There will be a new upstairs party and event room for rent, expanded kitchen capacity, and a new formal entry.

The bathrooms will also get an upgrade; auditoriums will get full recliner seating; and the storefront will get LED arrays to display showtimes and previews visible from the outside.

In addition, the renovations will replace the box office with a video arcade area.

Landmark Theatres owns 26 historic theaters throughout the U.S. and is part of the Cohen Media Group.
