Fire erupts at MCI-Norfolk prison, no major injuries reported
Three incarcerated individuals were treated for smoke inhalation, and one staff member went to the hospital as a precautionary measure.
A fire broke out Wednesday afternoon at MCI-Norfolk, the state’s largest medium-security prison, according to officials.
The Norfolk Fire Department responded to the prison at about 1:30 p.m. after a blaze began in one of the facility’s housing units, the Massachusetts Department of Correction said in a statement. The fire was quickly extinguished, and while no major injuries were reported, one staff member drove himself to a nearby hospital to be evaluated as a precautionary measure.
Three people incarcerated at the prison were treated on site for smoke inhalation, according to the Department of Correction. They will continue to be offered medical assessments as needed.

Officials said they are “currently assessing the extent of the damage” and accounting for any potential housing impacts at the facility. The cause of the fire is currently unknown and remains under investigation.
