A Connecticut man informed local authorities before he shot and killed his terminally ill wife and turned the gun on himself Monday, according to police.
The man called 911 around 7 p.m. and identified himself as 62-year-old John Ezzell, the Plainfield Police Department said in a news release. He reportedly informed dispatchers that his wife — 62-year-old Christine Ezzell — was suffering from terminal cancer and he intended to take her life and then his own.
John Ezzell also told authorities he would leave the door to their Kate Downing Road home open for first responders.
Plainfield officers who responded to the home found two people inside with apparent gunshot wounds. John and Christine Ezzell were pronounced dead at the scene, and police found a firearm nearby.
The Ezzells were taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for autopsies and further examination, police said.
Earlier Monday evening, Plainfield officials shut down Kate Downing Road between Spaulding and Pratt roads amid a “significant police presence.” Police described the incident as an isolated one, with no threat to the public.
