Two Dorchester women were injured Friday when their snowmobile struck several trees, throwing both riders off, in Columbia, New Hampshire, authorities said.
The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department was notified around 2:35 p.m. of a snowmobile crash with injuries near Fish Pond, according to a statement from the department.
An on-scene investigation determined that the operator, a 30-year-old Dorchester woman, was trying to navigate her way out of a plowed private roadway onto a nearby snowmobile trail when she lost control, officials said.
The woman, who was riding with a passenger, hit a snowbank on the right side of the road, causing the snowmobile to accelerate across the road and collide with multiple trees, authorities said.
The department cited rider inexperience as the primary factor in the crash. It was her first time operating a snowmobile, according to the department.
Both the woman and her passenger, a 22-year-old woman also from Dorchester, were ejected from the snowmobile in the crash and sustained injuries. Members of their riding party called 911 and provided immediate assistance, authorities said.
The Colebrook Fire Department used an Argo, a specialized tracked off-road vehicle, to transport the women to waiting 45th Parallel ambulances. Both were then taken to Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital for treatment, according to the department’s statement.
