Pedestrian struck by police cruiser at UMass Lowell, officials say
UMass confirmed a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle, with police saying they responded to “a serious crash involving a pedestrian and a cruiser."
A pedestrian was struck by a police cruiser outside a building on UMass Lowell’s South Campus Thursday evening, Lowell police and university officials confirmed.
A spokesperson for the University of Massachusetts Lowell said that a pedestrian was hit by a vehicle near the intersection of Broadway and Wilder Street, outside the McGauvran Center.
Lowell police confirmed officers responded to “a serious crash involving a pedestrian and a cruiser” around 6:30 p.m. at Wilder and Bachelder streets. Bachelder Street intersects with Wilder about a block away from its intersection with Broadway.
Lowell police and Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section are investigating the incident, police said.

In a statement, UMass Lowell called the the incident “tragic.” The pedestrian’s condition or potential affiliation with the university is unknown.
“The university will be making counseling resources available on Friday to members of the UMass Lowell community who witnessed the incident and are in need of support,” the statement said.
No other information was released Thursday evening.
