South Station fare gates are back in service after more than a week of closure

The South Station fare gates are back in service after they were shut down following a major statewide snowstorm.
The gates closed after a large winter storm brought frigid temperatures and 16 to 23 inches of snow to different parts of Boston between Jan. 25 and 26, said the MBTA.
The new commuter rail fare gates were inspected and turned on again after over a week of closure, commuter rail operator Keolis said.
“Staff from vendor Scheidt & Bachmann will now resume the final testing and commissioning for the gates,” a spokesperson from Keolis said, referring to the company that made the gates.

The fare gates were installed in December 2025. Other Boston stations like Back Bay and Ruggles are expected to receive the new gates in early 2026, the MBTA website says.
