A vehicle crashed into the Boston Common Wednesday morning, after the driver appeared to experience a medical emergency, police said.
The crash occurred at the intersection of Beacon Street and Walnut Street around 10:59 a.m., near the Frog Pond, the Boston Police Department said.
The car apparently sped down Walnut Street, crossing Beacon Street, and slammed into the stairs leading to the Common, WCVB reported.
According to Boston police, the driver appeared to be having a medical emergency, which contributed to the crash. The driver was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, the department said.
“Our thoughts are with the individuals involved in this morning’s accident on the Boston Common,” Friends of the Public Garden President Liza Meyer said in a statement.
The stairs and “surrounding masonry” is noticeably damaged, Meyer said, and her organization is “working closely with the City to assess the impact and support timely repairs so the area can be safely and fully accessible again.”
The same area has experienced other vehicle incidents.
In 2014, a 60-foot flatbed truck descended the same stairs; the driver was trying to leave Beacon Hill when the truck brakes failed.
“Our shared goal is to restore this space to full use as quickly as possible, ideally ahead of the busy summer season,” Meyer said.
