A fire at an Oakham house early Wednesday morning claimed the life of the home’s sole resident.
Shortly before 12:45 a.m., the Oakham Fire Department responded to 67 Skyline Drive after receiving a 911 call from a neighbor, according to a release from the state Department of Fire Services. Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and flames and learned a Rutland police officer had attempted to enter the home but was forced back by the intense conditions inside.
Responders faced extreme winter conditions, including six inches of snow on the ground and temperatures around 4 degrees, which caused hoselines to freeze and icy conditions, the release states. Fire crews struck multiple alarms to bring additional resources and battled the blaze for about an hour before bringing it under control.
Once the fire was extinguished, crews located one adult inside the home, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death, according to the release.
