From ‘Flake Maye’ to ‘Scrape Codder’: Meet MassDOT’s newest snowplows

Massachusetts students have once again proven they know how to have fun with winter weather.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation announced the winners of its fourth annual “Name a Snowplow” contest on Dec. 19, 2025, unveiling 12 clever names for plows that will be in service during the 2025–2026 winter season. The statewide competition invites elementary and middle school students to dream up creative names for the agency’s fleet, drawing entries from public school classrooms across the Commonwealth.
This year’s winning names reflect a mix of humor, pop culture, and local pride — from to Patriots-inspired “Flake Maye” to pun-heavy “Scrape Codder” and “Jon Bon Snowvi.”

The contest is designed to celebrate the snow and ice season while highlighting the work of public works crews who keep roads safe during winter storms.
“Thank you to all of the students who participated,” said Interim MassDOT Secretary and MBTA General Manager and CEO Phil Eng in a statement. “Your creativity allows us to highlight to all, the importance of the work performed by our workforce. … To our contest winners and participants, know that you have added some fun to the serious task of operating plows.”
Undersecretary and State Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver echoed that sentiment, calling the contest “a fun tradition that gets Massachusetts schools involved in winter safety” while giving students a chance to learn about the importance of snow and ice operations.

The 12 winning classrooms span MassDOT’s six highway districts and include students from kindergarten through eighth grade.
Winning submissions, kindergarten through fourth grade:
- District 1: Colrain Central School, Colrain (4th grade, Tabitha Shearer) — Master Snowda

- District 6: Saint Peter School, Cambridge (4th grade, Leah Toomey) — K Pop Snow Hunter
